How Much Does a CPA Cost in Maine?

Roughly $285 for a simple federal and Maine return, $420 itemized, and $950–$1,200 for a business return. Here is where those numbers come from, and how to work out your own.

First, the honest part

There is no current authoritative survey of what CPAs charge, and there has never been a Maine-specific one. The National Society of Accountants ran the standard national survey for years and stopped after the 2020–2021 edition.

So any page telling you “the average CPA in Maine charges X” is either quoting that 2020 survey without saying how old it is, or quoting one firm’s price list. We do the first, openly: the real national figures, their real date, and an inflation adjustment you can check. A Portland firm may sit above these numbers and a sole practitioner in a small town below them.

Individual returns

The survey prices a federal return together with a state return, which is exactly what a Maine resident files. Figures are the 2020 national averages, next to the same amount in August 2026 dollars.

Individual return fees
Return or schedule2020 surveyIn August 2026 dollars
Form 1040 + state return, standard deduction$220$285
Form 1040 + state return, itemized (Schedule A)$323$418

Then add what applies to you

This is how a real quote is built, and it is more useful than any single average. Start with the base return, then add a fee for each schedule your situation needs.

Per-schedule add-on fees
Return or schedule2020 surveyIn August 2026 dollars
Schedule C — self-employment or a small business$192$249
Schedule E — rental property$145$188
Schedule D / Form 8949 — investment gains and losses$118$153
Schedule F — farm$200$259
Schedule B — interest and dividends$42$54
Schedule SE — self-employment tax$41$53

A freelancer with one rental property who itemizes is therefore looking at roughly $418 + $249 + $188 — around $855 — before any firm-specific difference. That is a far better starting expectation than “about $300”.

Business returns

What makes a Maine return cost more

Maine taxes income in brackets, and every bracket, the standard deduction and the personal exemption are reset each year — 2026 also added a surcharge on very high incomes. None of that changes the price much on its own. What moves a Maine quote is anything that needs a worksheet instead of a number:

  • Retirement income. Maine exempts Social Security and lets retirees deduct pension and IRA income up to a cap — $49,824 per person for 2026 — but the cap is reduced by every dollar of Social Security received, and from 2025 it phases out when federal AGI passes $125,000 single or $250,000 joint. A retiree’s return is where a careful preparer earns the fee.
  • Moving in or out. A part-year Maine return apportions income between states, and Maine decides residency on all the facts, not just a day count. Leaving for Florida while keeping the Maine house, and its Homestead exemption, counts as evidence that you never left.
  • A business. Sales tax returns, and Paid Family and Medical Leave contributions on payroll — 1% of wages for employers with 15 or more employees for 2025–2027, 0.5% for smaller ones.
  • The new pass-through entity tax. From 2026, partnerships and S corporations can elect to pay Maine tax at the entity level. Owners get a credit for only 90% of it, so whether electing saves money is a genuine calculation, not a default.

What else moves your number

  • How organized you are. The biggest factor you control. A shoebox of receipts is billed as bookkeeping before it is billed as tax work.
  • Business activity. A Schedule C, a partnership or an S corp changes the category of work, not just the volume.
  • Rental property. Each one adds a Schedule E.
  • Where the firm is. Greater Portland firms tend to sit at the top of these ranges; a sole practitioner in a smaller town often sits below them.
  • When you call. February is cheaper than April, and in a state where most towns list one or two CPAs, the good ones are often full by late March.

When a CPA isn’t worth it

Worth saying plainly on a site that lists CPAs for a living. If you have one or two W-2s, take the standard deduction, and have no business, rental or investment complexity, tax software will do the same job for a fraction of the price.

And if your income is low, you may not need anyone to claim Maine’s refundable Property Tax Fairness Credit — up to $1,500 for 2026 if you are under 65, and $2,000 if you are 65 or older. Maine Revenue Services lets you claim it on a Maine return even if you don’t have to file a federal one.

A CPA earns the fee when there is a business, a rental, retirement income to plan around, a move, an inheritance, a letter from the IRS or Maine Revenue Services, or a decision — an entity choice, a property sale, a retirement date — where the planning is worth more than the return.

Three options, cheapest first

  1. Tax software, roughly $0–$130. Genuinely fine for one or two W-2s and the standard deduction.
  2. A remote licensed preparer, typically a few hundred dollars. A real person prepares and files your federal and Maine returns, remotely and usually for less than a local firm. Suits people who want a human but whose return does not need local judgment — and people catching up on past years, which established firms are often reluctant to take on.
  3. A local Maine CPA, the ranges on this page. A relationship, someone who knows Maine’s rules and your situation over time, and someone who can represent you.

The middle option

Taxfyle (opens in new tab) matches you with a licensed tax professional who prepares and files your return remotely, for a flat fee quoted up front.

Two things to be clear about. Taxfyle routes you to a licensed tax professional — that may be a CPA, an enrolled agent or another credentialed preparer, and they are not necessarily in Maine. And it is a filing service, not an advisor: nobody is going to call you in October about an entity election.

Don’t use it if you run a business with Maine sales tax or Paid Family and Medical Leave filings, you are weighing the new pass-through election, you are changing your domicile, you have a notice to answer, or you simply prefer sitting across a desk from someone. Those are the cases where a local CPA is worth the difference, and they are why this directory exists.

Getting a real quote in one email

Every range on this page is a starting expectation. To turn it into a number, give a firm enough to price you without a meeting:

I need a 2026 federal and Maine return prepared. My situation:

  • Filing status, and how many W-2s
  • Standard deduction or itemizing
  • Self-employment or a business, and which entity type
  • Number of rental properties
  • Whether I have investment sales to report
  • Social Security, pension or IRA income, if retired
  • Whether I moved into or out of Maine this year
  • Whether last year’s return was filed and clean

Could you give me a flat-fee quote, and tell me what would push it higher?

Send that to three firms. The spread you get back is the real answer for your situation, and it takes about ten minutes. Not sure where to start? Tell us what you need and we’ll email your options.

Common questions

How much does a CPA cost in Maine for a simple tax return?
Budget roughly $285 for a straightforward federal and Maine return taking the standard deduction, and roughly $420 if you itemize. Those are the last published national survey averages adjusted for inflation; no Maine-specific survey exists, so ask two or three firms for a flat-fee quote.
Why can nobody give me an exact price for a CPA?
Because no current authoritative fee survey exists. The National Society of Accountants stopped publishing its Income and Fees Survey after the 2020-2021 edition, so every confident number online is either that survey or a firm quoting its own prices. Fees also genuinely vary by complexity, location and firm size.
What makes a Maine return cost more?
The things that need a worksheet rather than a number: a pension deduction that Social Security reduces and that phases out at higher incomes, a move into or out of Maine during the year, a business with sales tax and Paid Family and Medical Leave filings, and from 2026 the new pass-through entity tax election for partnerships and S corporations.
Is a CPA charged hourly or as a flat fee?
Tax return preparation is usually a flat fee per return and schedule. Advisory work, cleanup of messy books, and IRS or Maine Revenue Services representation are usually hourly. Ask which applies before work starts, and for hourly work ask for an estimated ceiling.
Do I even need a CPA if my return is simple?
Often not. One or two W-2s, the standard deduction and no business, rental or investment complexity are well within reach of tax software. A CPA earns the fee when there is a business, rental property, retirement income to plan around, a move, an IRS or Maine Revenue Services letter, or a decision worth planning.

Where these numbers come from

Fees are the 2020 national averages from the National Society of Accountants Income and Fees Survey (opens in new tab), the most recent edition published. Amounts in August 2026 dollars are adjusted with the BLS CPI-U index (opens in new tab) (series CUUR0000SA0): 258.811 in 2020 against 334.980, an increase of 29.4%. Maine tax rules are from Maine Revenue Services (opens in new tab) and the Maine Department of Labor.

These are estimates for budgeting, not quotes, and nothing here is tax advice. Checked .
